Rome is famously known as the eternal city and has so many cool things you can do and see that it’s just not possible in one trip. While you require careful planning to see most of the famous places there, you can, however, indulge in the delicious food as much as you wish. Roman cuisine is known for being simple yet flavorful and very satisfying. From street food to proper restaurant food, it’s all worth a try.

Food is the best part of traveling!

At least, that’s what I believe. Trying out different dishes wherever you go is the best way to get to know a place’s culture and tradition. And roman cooking is done using century old traditions. I had always wanted to see the old Roman sites so I just had to Book Cheap Flights to Rome.

1. Supplì

A rice ball mixed with ragù and mozzarella and then cooked to a perfect texture. Really great appetizer to start a meal. There are a few variations available and it’s one of that food that you can eat on-the-go.

2. Fiori di Zucca

Easy yet flavorful dish of battered zucchini flowers stuffed with mozzarella cheese and anchovies. Different restaurants and food establishments have varying versions of this dish so go ahead and try as many.

3. Caprese Salad

This dish is so easy that you can easily make it at home as well. It’s made with the combination of thinly sliced mozzarella, tomatoes, and fresh basil. This salad represents the colors in the Italian flag and makes for a great starter.

4. Baccalà

Being at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, codfish is a staple in Roman cuisine and this quick dish has a piece of cod rolled in egg and bread crumbs batter and then fried. Simple but really delicious.

5. Carciofo Alla Romana

Or Roman-style-artichokes, this is a seasonal dish. It has a very buttery texture and is very aromatic because the artichokes are stuffed with herbs, braised and topped with lemon juice until perfection. Really makes you think differently about artichokes.

6. Pizza al Taglio

What is a visit to Italy without sampling a few types of pizza? Well, this Roman-style pizza is small sized with each piece a different flavor. While they stick to simple combinations, it’s still a delight to indulge in different types of pizza.

7. Focaccia

While it’s simply a flatbread similar to pizza base but a freshly baked one with sea salt and rosemary on top is simply delicious. There are so many varieties of this dish with all sorts of toppings so another dish you should experiment with.

8. Pizza Romana

The Roman version of proper pizza. It has a thin crust and is much lighter than its usual counterpart. Again, toppings may vary and would tend to be simple but aromatic and appetizing.

9. Carbonara

Again, what is a visit to Italy without tasting some pasta? And this pasta happened to be my favorite, so much so that I make it myself as well. Not as good as the one I had in Rome though. The creamy egg-based sauce with bits of meat topped with a dash of pepper is simply a delight for the palate.

10. Bucatini all’Amatriciana

Another pasta type but this type it’s made in a tomato based sauce with crispy bits of meat. The pasta used is thicker like those hollow spaghetti. Just wear a napkin when you eat it because all that slurping will make a mess!

11. Salami and Cheese Board

A simple appetizer but the variety makes it amazing. Best way to enjoy it is to take your time and savor each type of cheese and salami, appreciating the subtle differences.

12. Bruschetta

The original Roman version is topped with garlic and olive oil only but now there are many varieties available. The most common is the Tuscan Bruschetta that has a generous topping of crushed tomatoes and some fennel seeds along with the original one.

13. Gnocchi

While egg or wheat-based pasta is nothing new, I was quite impressed with this potato-based one. And believe me, they’re hard to make so you’ll come to appreciate the chef’s efforts. A soft chewy texture goes with pretty much every type of sauce out there. My personal favorite is the Pomodoro gnocchi. Or the cheese and butter ones.

14. Maritozzo

Best way to start the day in Rome is to grab a nice cup of coffee and this delicious pastry. It’s a sweet bread roll filled with light whipped cream. While I’m addicted to croissants, I couldn’t have enough of this breakfast dish.

15. Tiramisu

The best way to end a good meal is with something sweet and you can rest assured that there are many options. While the delicious variety of tarts are great, my personal favorite is definitely tiramisu. It was invented after WWII and can be found in almost any sweet shop throughout Rome. The creamy, hearty flavor of this pudding is just so satisfying that you’d want to end all three meals of the day with it!
