How to Make Money While Traveling

While traveling is fun and adventurous, the different currency exchange rates around the world can make it expensive. The biggest issue while traveling is to manage a specific budget. However, there is hope! As shocking as it may sound, there are ways to earn money while traveling. Of course, you may think that working while traveling will surely take away all the fun out of it but that is not the case. Again, I assure you that while getting a part-time job somewhere may hinder all the fun, it isn’t the only way to earn some extra cash while on vacation.

My advice

Personally, earning while traveling is not all about money. You also get to interact with the locals and get to learn more about the place, getting glimpses of everyday life there from time to time. Of course, it’s always nice to have some extra money for shopping and such or you can just save it and later let it join your overall savings. Besides, traveling on a budget feel way better. I even Book Online Flights and still compare them to other flight tickets for the cheapest possible flights.

Why is this so unheard of?

Well, the simple answer is that traveling is something people do for fun so the just the idea of doing work is not all that attractive. That and because you don’t quite have that many options for work and not everyone comes equipped with a specific set of skills. Generally, people see traveling as an expensive hobby so they don’t even question the budget hence the lack of tips to earn money while on vacation.

Photography

If you happen to have a thing for photography and like to make up a memorable album then I have good news for you. There are many sites that buy photos for general use. Such photos can then be used in a number of ways. Or if you have your own online portfolio website then you can put up your best photos for sale. Of course, it all depends if you manage to sell your photos but as an option, it’s quite wonderful. Another way you can make money off of them is to make fine prints of them and perhaps coordinate with a local shop to sell them there.

Some events also hire photographers to take those corny tourist pictures. I remember when I went to Dubai and went for a Dhow Cruise dinner. There was a photographer going around offering to take pictures that you can later buy by the end of the dinner. Out of curiosity, I asked if he was working freelance but he proudly announced that he was a fellow tourist. Quite inspiring.

Blogging

Travel blogging can be treated as a full-time job and it’s one of those rare jobs that you can do from anywhere. So if you already have a travel blog, simply do what you do best and share your experiences and tips with the world.

Similarly, video blogging is also becoming quite a trend these days. There are many websites that you can upload your edited video blog or even live stream it as you go. One of the most popular videos hosting website is of course YouTube. If you keep your vlog family-friendly, you can easily get ads and have your video monetized. Or if you manage to get a sponsor then you’ll get a commission.

Tutoring

In most countries, there’s a high demand for the English language so if you happen to be good at English then you can certainly teach the locals. There are several language schools in most cities that hire part-time teachers. Not only will you get to communicate with the locals and perhaps other foreigners, but also teach them something you know. You can also teach other things but for that, you’ll have to contact local educational institutes. When I traveled to Havana in Cuba, I met a few locals who wanted to learn English so for a very reasonable fee I taught them the basics.

Another way you can earn money from teaching is that if you happen to give online classes then you can simply adjust your schedule and keep on doing what you’re already doing. In fact, this makes it possible to get a part-time job and then when you leave you can continue teaching them online.

Tour guide

This option is only for the people who have been to one place many times yet they still go there for a visit. If you know enough about the area and its history then you can talk with a travel and tours company they may hire you on a short-term basis and make some extra cash. Since the most commonly spoken language is English, you should try giving the tour in that. Make it fun so the tourist can later recommend to other fellow tourists they may meet.

Work from home

If you have a full-time job then talk to your boss and see if it’s alright to work from home. Clear it up that you’ll be going on a trip and working via online. If your work-place is friendly enough then you can totally do your normal job while having a fun adventure.

Free-lance

There are many jobs that can be done via email. You can download apps or sign-up on websites that’ll connect you with clients or companies with whom you can work on a short-term project. There are many types of free-lancing jobs out there, some of the top choices that don’t take that much time are:

  • Translating- if you happen to be bilingual then you can take up projects that need some translating work to be done.

  • Content writing- a growing occupation which requires you to write a certain amount of words on a certain topic.

  • Copywriting- similar to content writing but more closely related to marketing.

Social media marketing- if you own a blog then you can promote different products and services. Any client that buys the product or make use of the service using the link you give you’ll get a good commission. Amazon is quite famous for this kind of marketing.
